Scope

This policy applies to the BetterScreenShot Windows application and its companion browser extension. The verified public extension listing is available through the Google Chrome Web Store. BetterScreenShot includes Microsoft Edge integration, but the public Microsoft Edge Add-ons page was unavailable when this policy was reviewed on July 22, 2026.

Overview

BetterScreenShot is a Windows capture application that lets users create, view, annotate, manage, save, and export screenshots; record and trim screen video; and use local OCR and QR recognition tools. Its optional companion browser extension captures the active webpage as a full-page image at the user's request and transfers that image locally to the installed BetterScreenShot application.

BetterScreenShot does not operate a cloud screenshot service, does not contain advertising or analytics, and does not sell user data.

When BetterScreenShot Operates

The Windows application processes content when the user launches the application, uses screenshot or recording features, opens or edits an image, requests OCR or QR recognition, manages local History, saves or exports a file, or requests a webpage capture through the companion extension.

The browser extension accesses and captures a webpage only after the user deliberately starts a full-page capture from the BetterScreenShot extension interface. It does not continuously monitor tabs, record general browsing activity, or capture webpages in the background.

Information Handled

Depending on the feature selected by the user, the Windows application and browser extension handle the following information:

• Screenshot and image content: The Windows application handles screenshots the user creates, opens, edits, receives from the browser extension, saves, or exports. A screenshot may incidentally contain personal or sensitive information if that information is visible in the captured or opened image. BetterScreenShot does not inspect, classify, or extract such information for unrelated purposes.
• Screen recording and optional audio: When the user deliberately starts a recording, the Windows application handles the selected screen content and any audio source the user enables for that recording. Recording stops when the user stops it. The resulting local recording may incidentally contain personal or sensitive information visible or audible during the selected period.
• Optional camera and input overlays: When the user enables the camera bubble, click effects, or keystroke overlays for a recording, BetterScreenShot processes the selected camera feed and input events locally to render those elements. Keystroke events are transient and are not stored as a separate keystroke log.
• OCR and QR results: When the user requests OCR or QR recognition, BetterScreenShot processes the selected image or captured area on the device and displays the recognized text or code content for the user.
• Website content: During a user-requested full-page capture, the browser extension captures the rendered, visible content of the active webpage as image pixels and stitches those pixels into a full-page screenshot.
• Current page details: The title and URL of the webpage being captured are included with the screenshot so the BetterScreenShot Windows application can identify the capture's source. The extension does not create or maintain a list of other pages the user visits.
• Local file information: When the user opens, saves, or exports an image, the Windows application may handle the file name and storage location selected by the user as needed to complete that action.
• Application preferences and History: The Windows application may store local settings and History information needed to provide the user's selected retention and application preferences.
• Local backups, diagnostics, and automation: When requested, the application handles selected backup data, a privacy-reviewed diagnostic report, or user-configured automation commands locally. These outputs remain under the user's control unless the user deliberately shares them.
• Capture status: Capture state, progress, error information, and the time of the latest status update are stored in the browser's local extension storage so the extension interface can show capture progress and results.
• Technical capture information: A capture identifier, image size, chunk count, and frame count are used to transfer and reconstruct the requested screenshot locally.

BetterScreenShot does not intentionally collect names, email addresses, account credentials, passwords, payment information, health information, precise location, personal communications, advertising identifiers, or analytics data for the publisher or for purposes unrelated to the feature the user selected. Clicks and keystrokes are processed only when the user enables the corresponding recording overlay and are not stored as a separate input log. Sensitive information may still appear incidentally in screenshots, recordings, opened files, recognition results, or support material the user chooses to share.

How Information Is Used

The information described above is used only to:

1. create, receive, display, edit, and manage screenshots in the Windows application;
2. record, preview, trim, convert, save, and export screen recordings when the user requests those actions;
3. render camera, click, or keystroke overlays when the user enables them;
4. recognize and display text or QR content from the user-selected image or capture area;
5. measure, temporarily scroll, capture, and stitch the active webpage when the user requests a full-page browser capture;
6. display capture progress or errors;
7. transfer the completed webpage screenshot and its current page title and URL to the installed BetterScreenShot Windows application;
8. maintain local History according to the user's local retention settings;
9. create or restore a local backup, export a diagnostic report, or run user-configured automation when requested; and
10. save or export an image when the user chooses to do so.

The page is restored to its previous scroll position after the capture attempt finishes.

Local Processing and Communication Between Products

Screenshot, recording, OCR, and QR processing occurs on the user's device. A completed browser capture and its associated current page title and URL are sent through the browser's native messaging interface to the registered BetterScreenShot application installed on the same Windows device.

BetterScreenShot does not automatically upload captured webpage content, URLs, page titles, locally opened images, screenshots, screen recordings, audio, or recognition results to the publisher's servers or to third-party services. Content leaves the device only when the user deliberately shares or attaches it, such as in a support request.

Storage and Retention

The extension does not maintain a screenshot library. A completed screenshot is held only as needed to build it and transfer it to the BetterScreenShot Windows application.

Capture status information remains in the browser's local extension storage until it is replaced by a later status or the user clears the extension's data or removes the extension.

The Windows application may retain captures locally in its History according to the user's local retention settings. Users can delete captures from BetterScreenShot History.

Images and recordings the user chooses to save or export remain in the selected Windows storage location until the user moves or deletes them.

Backup files and diagnostic reports remain in the location the user chooses until the user moves or deletes them. BetterScreenShot does not automatically submit a diagnostic report.

Sharing, Sale, and Unrelated Use

The publisher does not sell user data. BetterScreenShot does not automatically transfer captured content to third parties, use it for advertising, use it for analytics, use it for purposes unrelated to screenshot functionality, or use it to determine creditworthiness or for lending purposes.

No publisher employee or contractor can access or read the user's screenshots or captured webpage content unless the user deliberately includes that content or a diagnostic sample in a support request. BetterScreenShot does not transmit it automatically.

Chrome Web Store Limited Use Disclosure

BetterScreenShot's use of information received from Chrome APIs adheres to the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.

Information handled through Chrome APIs is used only to provide BetterScreenShot's disclosed full-page capture feature. It is not used for personalized advertising, transferred to data brokers or information resellers, used to determine creditworthiness, or made available for unrelated human review.

Browser Extension Remote Code

All executable JavaScript used by the extension is included in the extension package obtained from its official browser marketplace. The extension does not download or execute remotely hosted JavaScript or WebAssembly.

User Choices and Controls

Users control data handling by choosing whether to create, open, edit, save, export, or delete screenshots; whether to start or stop a screen recording and enable audio, camera, click, or keystroke overlays; whether to run OCR or QR recognition; whether to create a backup or diagnostic report; whether to configure automation; and whether to start a browser capture. Users may also:

• stop using or remove the browser extension;
• clear the extension's locally stored data through Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge;
• uninstall the BetterScreenShot Windows application;
• delete captures from BetterScreenShot History; and
• delete locally saved or exported images and recordings through Windows.

Removing the extension prevents future webpage captures through the extension. Uninstalling the Windows application prevents future use of its capture features but does not automatically delete image or recording files the user previously saved or exported elsewhere in Windows.

Children's Privacy

BetterScreenShot and its browser extension are not directed to children and do not knowingly collect personal information from children.

Changes to This Policy

This policy may be updated if the Windows application's or browser extension's functionality or data practices change. The effective date at the top of this page will be revised when an update is published.
