BetterScreenShotEdit Recordings and GIFs in Studio

What Studio is

Studio is BetterScreenShot's non-destructive editor for recordings and editable GIFs.

Project edits describe how the final output should be composed. They do not rewrite the original recording while you work.

Open a project

You can enter Studio after a new recording or from a supported History item.

Before editing a long or important recording:

1. Confirm the recording finished finalizing.
2. Preserve any Recovery Center item until the finalized result is verified.
3. Confirm that there is enough free disk space for preview data and export.
4. Keep the original project until the final output has been reviewed.

Timeline editing

Studio supports:

• Selecting and trimming ranges.
• Splitting a clip.
• Removing a range.
• Merging compatible timeline sections.
• Reordering supported project segments.
• Clip speed from 0.25× to 4×.
• Timeline zoom and snapping.
• Previous-frame and next-frame movement.
• Undo and redo.
• Capturing the current frame as a screenshot.

A trim-only export may use stream copying when the source format and requested boundaries allow it. Encoded video frames do not always start at the exact selected timestamp, so BetterScreenShot can offer a nearby verified keyframe instead of silently producing a broken file.

Auto Zoom

Auto Zoom uses pointer and click timing recorded locally with the project. It creates editable suggestions in Studio. The raw video remains unchanged.

You can:

• Choose subtle, balanced, or dynamic intensity.
• Regenerate automatic suggestions.
• Add a manual zoom.
• Change zoom scale and focus.
• Choose smooth, ease-in, ease-out, or linear movement.
• Adjust entrance and exit duration.
• Duplicate or split a zoom.
• Follow the recorded pointer inside bounded movement rules.
• Fade the camera when it covers the zoom focus.

Review every suggestion. Delete unnecessary movement and keep zooms long enough for the viewer to understand the focused action.

Recorded pointer focus

When pointer following is enabled, Studio can move the zoom focus toward the recorded pointer. Hold time and dead-zone controls keep small movements from creating constant motion.

If the focus looks nervous:

1. Increase the dead zone.
2. Increase hold time.
3. Reduce zoom intensity.
4. Shorten the affected segment.
5. Turn pointer following off for that zoom.

Composition

Choose an output canvas:

• Original.
• 16:9.
• 9:16.
• 1:1.
• 4:3.
• 5:4.

Then configure:

• Solid, gradient, bundled, or custom-image background.
• Horizontal and vertical padding.
• Source alignment.
• Rounded source corners.
• Background blur.
• Source shadow.
• Reusable composition presets.

Overlays

Studio can place timed editable overlays such as:

• Text.
• Images.
• Imported audio.
• Masks.
• Highlight.
• Blur.
• Pixelation.
• Dim regions.

Check the complete duration, not only the current preview frame. A privacy overlay that starts late or ends early can expose content in the final video.

Camera layouts

Available project layouts include:

• Camera bubble.
• Fullscreen camera.
• Camera only.
• Split screen and camera.

Depending on layout, adjust:

• Position.
• Scale.
• Crop.
• Internal camera zoom.
• Opacity.
• Fade.
• Layout keyframes.
• Camera fading over an Auto Zoom focus.

The original screen and camera tracks remain separate in the project where the recording workflow supports them.

Audio

Studio can control:

• Microphone volume.
• Computer or system audio volume.
• Original imported media audio.
• Imported audio clips.
• Clip timing.
• Volume up to 200%.
• Fade in and fade out.
• Voice boost.
• Quiet-noise reduction.
• Voice normalization.
• Mono output.

Listen to the complete exported file with headphones before publishing. A preview cannot guarantee how every player will mix or normalize the result.

Optional native transcript draft

Studio can use an installed Windows speech-recognition language to create a local transcript draft. This current native transcriber can be inaccurate, especially with accents, device noise, mixed speakers, specialist terms, and unsupported languages.

Treat it as an optional starting point only.

If you use it:

1. Select an installed Windows speech language that matches the recording.
2. Add unusual names or terms as recognition context when available.
3. Generate the draft locally.
4. Compare every segment with the recording.
5. Correct or delete inaccurate text.
6. Generate captions or chapter suggestions only after review.
7. Review the final export again.

Do not use the native transcript as the sole record for legal, medical, financial, accessibility-critical, or safety-critical content.

Captions and chapters

Reviewed transcript segments can be used for editable caption and chapter suggestions.

Caption styles include:

• Classic.
• Boxed.
• Karaoke, including active-word emphasis where timing exists.

Captions and chapters remain project data until included in an export. Check wording, timing, line length, safe-area placement, and contrast.

Import and export

Studio can work with supported local MP4 and WebM video and supported GIF input. Export options include:

• MP4.
• WebM.
• Optimized GIF.

GIF is silent and can become very large for long, detailed, high-resolution content. Use video when motion, color, duration, or audio makes GIF impractical.

Share the current edit through Google Drive

When you choose Google Drive sharing for an edited recording or GIF, BetterScreenShot renders the current project in a background sharing worker before upload. Studio settings are preserved in the rendered result. The editable project and separate source tracks are not uploaded.

Export is slow

Long duration, high resolution, high frame rate, multiple overlays, camera composition, audio processing, GIF optimization, and software encoding can increase export time.

• Keep BetterScreenShot open.
• Confirm free disk space.
• Do not repeatedly start the same export.
• Try a short test range to isolate the problem.
• Preserve the media project and Recovery Center item if export fails.

Output looks different from the preview

1. Confirm the export aspect ratio and background preset.
2. Review zoom and camera keyframes at the exact timestamp.
3. Check timed overlay start and end.
4. Confirm the export format and quality.
5. Export a short range containing the problem.
6. Save diagnostics and contact support if the same project remains inconsistent.
